OPEN HOUSE 9/8: Are you excited? Sewer we.

In celebration of our 40th anniversary, we invite you to attend the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District's 5th annual “Where Does It Go?” Open House on Saturday, September 8. The event will take place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m at the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant near Edgewater State Park in Cleveland.

Guests are invited to tour Westerly to see the wastewater treatment process and why this service is essential to our community. A walking tour will show customers first-hand how the rates they pay are used to protect their health and environment.

College and high-school students toured Westerly this summer.

"It’s very important that we open up our doors and show the public the extensive and complicated work we do every day,” said Westerly Superintendent John Augustine “It’s important that the public understand the process and how their monies are used to protect public health and the environment. We want our guests to leave with a greater understanding and sense of the District’s positive impact on the community.”

The tour will include an overview of the extensive process required to clean water, and how garbage and waste are managed.

The family-friendly event will begin at the Westerly Wastewater Treatment Plant located at 5800 W. Memorial Shoreway in Cleveland just east of Edgewater State Park [View map]. Kids will be able to make slime, perform experiments, see the bugs and fish that help us check local streams' water quality, and learn more about the large trucks and equipment we use every day. In addition, Wally Waterdrop will be on-hand to greet guests.

(But you can bypass it if heights aren't for you.)

“This event has been extremely popular the last several years, and we are typically booked within a matter of days,” said the Sewer District's Community Relations Specialist Mardele Cohen.

Visitors who plan to take the walking tour are asked to please dress accordingly: Long pants (if possible) and closed-toe hard-sole shoes (no sandals or Crocs). Strollers and wheelchairs will not be permitted on the walking tour due to limited access, but our activity area and shuttle from the parking area will be handicap and stroller accessible.
